Avoid meetings, they are often a waste of time from "summary" of ReWork by David Heinemeier Hansson,Jason Fried
Meetings are toxic. They're usually about words and abstract concepts, not real things. People get together and start discussing things. You know what happens next? Decisions. But even more commonly, indecision. It's a lack of clarity that kills productivity. You can't have a meeting unless someone is remote. Meetings procreate. They spawn more meetings. Meeting are a form of small talk. They're a way for people to avoid responsibility. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. They don't have time to sit around and have meetings. When you're holding a meeting, you're making a decision. You're deciding what's important and what's not. And most of the time, meetings are what's not important. They're what people do when they don't want to actually work. The real problem with meetings is that they're just so easy to call. A meeting is the 30-minute time slot you saw open and you threw on your calendar. A meeting is what you do instead of actually working. You don't have to think hard about meetings. They're a default. But default is not a good way to do things. Default decisions are the easy decisions, not the right ones. When you have a meeting, you're making a decision not to work on something else. Meetings are a great way to break up the day. They chop the day into little bits so that nothing gets done. No one ever gets anything done at a meeting. They just get things started. And that's the problem. Meetings don't actually accomplish anything. They're just a way to pretend that you're getting things done. Meetings are a way to avoid actually doing the work. The work happens in between meetings. That's when things actually get done. Because when you're in a meeting, you're not getting anything done. You're just talking about getting things done. And that's a waste of time. Meetings are toxic. They're a waste of time. You're better off avoiding them altogether. When you avoid meetings, you can focus on actually doing the work. And that's how things get done. So skip the meetings and start working. That's the only way to be productive.Similar Posts
