Deep work requires adequate rest periods from "summary" of Rest by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang
In a culture that glorifies busyness and constant productivity, we often overlook the importance of rest in achieving deep work. We tend to believe that the longer and harder we work, the more successful we will be. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Research has shown that working long hours without breaks actually decreases our productivity and creativity. To truly engage in deep work, we need to allow ourselves adequate rest periods. This means taking breaks throughout the day to recharge our mental and physical energy. By stepping away from our work and giving our minds a chance to rest, we are able to come back with a fresh perspective and renewed focus. Moreover, rest is not just about taking breaks during the workday. It also involves getting enough sleep at night and taking regular days off to fully relax and recharge. When we are well-rested, our cognitive abilities are enhanced, allowing us to delve deeper into our work and produce higher-quality output.- Especially when there is pressure to constantly be productive. However, by recognizing the value of rest in achieving deep work, we can make it a priority in our lives. Ultimately, by balancing periods of intense focus with adequate rest, we can maximize our productivity and creativity in the long run.
