Transformative change is necessary to achieve educational equity from "summary" of Race, Class, and Education by Kenneth J. Meier,Joseph Stewart,Robert E. England
In order to truly address the deep-rooted issues of educational inequity that persist in our society, a fundamental shift in our approach to education is required. This change must be transformative in nature, going beyond superficial solutions to address the systemic inequalities that contribute to disparities in educational outcomes. By transformative change, we mean a comprehensive overhaul of the structures and practices that perpetuate inequality in our education system. This includes reexamining the ways in which resources are allocated, the curriculum is designed, and policies are implemented. It also involves challenging the underlying assumptions and biases that shape our understanding of what constitutes a quality education. Educational equity cannot be achieved through incremental reforms or piecemeal interventions. It requires a bold and visionary approach that is willing to confront the uncomfortable truths about race, class, and power dynamics that shape our educational system. This means addressing not only the disparities in academic achievement, but also the broader social and economic factors that contribute to these disparities. Furthermore, transformative change must prioritize the voices and experiences of those most affected by educational inequity – students, families, and communities of color, low-income communities, and other marginalized groups. Their insights and perspectives must inform the policies and practices that are put in place to promote equity and justice in education.- Achieving educational equity will require a sustained commitment to challenging the status quo, dismantling oppressive structures, and building a more inclusive and just educational system. It will not be easy, but it is necessary if we are truly committed to creating a more equitable and just society for all.
