Children with conduct disorder are characterized by a persistent pattern of behavior that violates the rights of others and societal norms. These behaviors may include aggression towards people or animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of rules. Conduct disorder typically emerges in childhood or adolescence and can have serious negative consequences for the individual and those around them. Research has shown that children with conduct disorder are at an increased risk for developing psychopathy later in life. Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse, as well as manipulative and deceitful behavior. While not all individuals with conduct disorder will go on to develop psychopathy, the two disorders share some common underlying risk factors. One such risk factor is genetic predisposition.
