Employers exploit power differentials to suppress workers' advocacy from "summary" of Private Government by Elizabeth Anderson

Employers wield power over workers by virtue of their control over resources necessary for livelihoods. They have the power to hire and fire at will. Workers, on the other hand, depend on their jobs for income and security. This power differential creates a situation in which workers may feel compelled to keep their grievances to themselves, for fear of reprisal. Employers can exploit this dynamic to suppress workers' advocacy and prevent collective action. By controlling workers' access to resources, employers can effectively silence dissent within the workplace. Workers who speak out against unfair treatment or poor working conditions risk losing their jobs and livelihoods. This threat of economic insecurity serves as a powerful deterrent against organized resistance. Employers may also use other tactics to discourage workers from advocating for their rights, such as intimidation, harassment, or blacklisting. In this way, employers maintain a private government within the workplace, in which they exercise unchecked power over workers' lives. This system of control enables employers to prioritize their own interests over those of their employees, without fear of meaningful opposition. Workers are left with little recourse to challenge exploitative practices and injustices within the workplace. The power differential between employers and workers is not simply a matter of individual interactions, but a structural feature of the employment relationship. This power dynamic is reinforced by broader social and economic forces that prioritize profit-making and managerial control. As a result, workers are often left vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, as employers exploit their position of authority to suppress dissent and maintain control.
