Use power poses to boost confidence from "summary" of Presence by Amy Cuddy

When we feel powerless, we tend to shrink into ourselves, adopting closed-off body language that only reinforces our feelings of inadequacy. Conversely, when we feel powerful, we naturally expand and take up space, projecting confidence and authority. This connection between our physical posture and our psychological state is at the heart of the concept of power poses. By assuming open, expansive postures, such as standing with our feet shoulder-width apart and our arms raised in a victory pose, we can actually trick our brains into feeling more confident and powerful. These power poses not only change how others perceive us but also alter our own internal sense of self-assurance. Through her research, Amy Cuddy has discovered that just two minutes spent in a power pose can significantly boost our levels of testosterone (the dominance hormone) while lowering our levels of cortisol (the stress hormone). This hormonal shift leads to increased feelings of confidence and reduced anxiety, setting the stage for greater success in high-pressure situations. So, the next time you find yourself in need of a confidence boost, try striking a power pose for a couple of minutes. Whether it's before a job interview, a big presentation, or a challenging conversation, taking a moment to stand tall and proud can make all the difference in how you feel and how you perform. Embrace the power of your body to change your mind and unlock your full potential.
