Health care is a major concern for the poor from "summary" of Poor Economics by Abhijit Banerjee,Esther Duflo

Health care looms large in the minds of the poor. When a family lives on the edge, any illness can push them over. The fear of not being able to afford treatment can lead to delayed or inadequate care. As a result, preventable conditions go untreated, leading to unnecessary suffering and even death. For the poor, health care is not just about physical well-being, but also about economic survival. The high cost of medical care can plunge a family into debt or bankruptcy. This financial burden can have long-lasting consequences, trapping them in a cycle of poverty. Access to quality health care is often limited for the poor. They may live in remote areas with few healthcare facilities, or lack transportation to reach them. Even when services are available, they may be unaffordable or of poor quality. This lack of access exacerbates health disparities and perpetuates poverty. Furthermore, the poor may lack the knowledge or information needed to make informed decisions about their health. Without proper education about prevention and treatment, they may resort to ineffective or harmful practices. This ignorance can further undermine their health and well-being. In addition, social factors such as stigma and discrimination can also prevent the poor from seeking care. They may fear judgment or mistreatment from healthcare providers, leading them to avoid seeking help until their condition becomes critical. This delay can result in worsened health outcomes and increased suffering.
  1. The poor face a myriad of challenges when it comes to accessing and affording health care. Addressing these barriers is crucial not only for improving their well-being, but also for breaking the cycle of poverty that traps so many in a cycle of illness and deprivation.
