Women used pistols as tools of empowerment from "summary" of Pistols and Petticoats by Erika Janik

Throughout history, women have often been portrayed as weak and powerless, but the reality is far from it. In times of danger and uncertainty, women turned to pistols as a means of empowerment. These small but mighty weapons provided women with a sense of security and independence in a male-dominated world. In the early days of American settlement, women faced numerous threats to their safety. Whether it was from wild animals, hostile Native American tribes, or lawless outlaws, women needed to protect themselves and their families. Pistols became a tool for survival, allowing women to defend their homes and loved ones when necessary. As the country expanded westward, so too did the need for women to be armed. The frontier was a dangerous place, with dangers lurking around every corner. Women on the frontier often found themselves alone for long periods of time, with no one to rely on but themselves. Pistols gave these women a sense of security and control over their own lives. During the Civil War, women took on new roles and responsibilities as men went off to fight. Many women became nurses, spies, and even soldiers in disguise. Pistols became essential tools for these brave women, allowing them to protect themselves as they carried out their duties. In the post-Civil War era, women continued to use pistols as tools of empowerment. Whether it was for self-defense or simply to assert their independence, pistols became a symbol of strength and resilience for women across the country. No longer content to be seen as weak and helpless, women took matters into their own hands – quite literally – and refused to be victims any longer.
