The body's center of mass influences stability from "summary" of Physics of the Human Body by Richard P. McCall

One key factor that plays a significant role in determining an individual's stability is the location of their body's center of mass. The center of mass can be thought of as the point where the body's mass is concentrated, and it influences how stable a person is in various positions and movements. When a person is standing still, their center of mass is typically located around the area of their abdomen or pelvis. This low center of mass provides a stable base, making it easier for the person to maintain their balance. However, when a person leans or shifts their weight to one side, their center of mass also shifts in that direction. This change in the center of mass can affect the person's stability, potentially causing them to lose their balance if they do not adjust accordingly. In addition to the vertical position of the center of mass, its horizontal position relative to the body also plays a crucial role in stability. For example, when a person bends forward, their center of mass shifts forward as well. This forward shift can make it more challenging for the person to maintain their balance, especially if they are not prepared for the change. Furthermore, the shape and distribution of an individual's body mass also impact their stability. For instance, a person with more body mass located in their upper body may have a higher center of mass, making them less stable compared to someone with more mass in their lower body. This difference in stability can be observed when comparing the balance of a person with a heavier upper body, such as a bodybuilder, to that of a person with a heavier lower body, such as a cyclist.
  1. The body's center of mass is a critical factor in determining an individual's stability in various positions and movements. By understanding how the center of mass influences stability, one can better assess and improve their balance and coordination in different activities and scenarios.
