Optics explains how the eye perceives light from "summary" of Physics of the Human Body by Richard P. McCall

The field of optics plays a key role in understanding how the eye perceives light. When light enters the eye, it passes through the cornea, which is the transparent outer covering of the eye. The cornea's curved shape helps to bend the light rays and focus them onto the lens located behind it. The lens further refracts the light rays to ensure that they converge onto the retina, which is a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. The retina contains cells called photoreceptors, which are responsible for converting light energy into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain. There are two types of photoreceptors in the retina, known as rods and cones. Rods are sensitive to low light levels and are responsible for night vision, while cones are responsible for color vision and function best in bright light conditions. The optic nerve carries the electrical signals generated by the photoreceptors to the brain, where they are processed and interpreted as images. The brain's ability to interpret these signals allows us to perceive the world around us in terms of shapes, colors, and movement.
  1. The field of optics provides valuable insights into how the eye perceives light. By understanding the complex interactions between light and the structures of the eye, we can appreciate the remarkable process by which we are able to see and make sense of our visual environment.
