Misunderstandings in language arise from different language games from "summary" of Philosophical Investigations by Ludwig Wittgenstein

When we communicate with one another, we often assume that we share a common understanding of the meanings of words and phrases. However, misunderstandings can easily arise when individuals are playing different "language games." This concept, introduced by Wittgenstein in his Philosophical Investigations, suggests that language is not a fixed set of rules and meanings but is instead shaped by the context in which it is used. In Wittgenstein's view, language is not a static entity but is rather a dynamic system of communication that is constantly evolving and adapting to different situations. Different language games represent different contexts in which language is used, each with its own set of rules and meanings. When individuals engage in different language games, they may use the same words and phrases but attach different meanings to them based on the context in which they are used. For example, consider the word "run." In one language game, "run" may refer to a physical activity involving rapid movement on foot. In another language game, "run" may refer to the operation of a machine or computer program. If individuals from these two language games were to communicate with one another using the word "run," they may misunderstand each other's meanings due to the different contexts in which they are using the word. This concept of different language games helps to explain why misunderstandings in language can occur even when individuals are using the same words and phrases. It highlights the importance of considering the context in which language is used and being aware of the different meanings that words and phrases can have in different situations. By recognizing the existence of different language games, we can better understand how miscommunications arise and work towards resolving them through clearer communication and shared understanding.
