Ramachandran has discovered that phantom limb pain can be alleviated through visual and tactile stimulation. He found that patients who experienced discomfort in their non-existent limbs could find relief by using a mirror reflection of their intact limb. By tricking the brain into thinking that the missing limb is actually present and moving in sync with the existing limb, the pain subsides. This phenomenon can be attributed to the brain's ability to reorganize itself and adapt to new sensory inputs.
