Selfconfidence is often an illusion from "summary" of Perfectly Confident by Don A. Moore

Self-confidence can sometimes feel like a shield against the uncertainties of life, a suit of armor protecting us from self-doubt and fear. We walk a little taller, speak a little louder, and take risks we might not otherwise take when we believe in ourselves. Yet, as comforting as it may be to feel self-assured, the reality is that true self-confidence is often an illusion. We tend to overestimate our own abilities and underestimate the obstacles in our way. We focus on our strengths and successes, conveniently forgetting our failures and shortcomings. This selective memory creates a distorted self-image that can lead us astray. When we are overly confident in our own judgment, we may fail to seek out advice or consider alternative perspectives. This can blind us to the risks and pitfalls that lie ahead, leading us to make poor decisions based on flawed assumptions. Moreover, the very act of projecting confidence can sometimes deceive others into believing in us more than they should. We may talk a big game and exude charisma, but underneath the facade, we may be riddled with doubt and insecurity. This mismatch between our outward appearance and inner reality can create a dangerous feedback loop, where our inflated self-image is reinforced by the positive feedback we receive from others. In reality, true confidence comes from a place of humility and self-awareness. It requires us to acknowledge our limitations and seek out feedback and advice from others. It means being willing to admit when we are wrong and learn from our mistakes. It involves a constant process of self-reflection and growth, rather than a static belief in our own infallibility. To truly be confident, we must be willing to confront our illusions and face the uncomfortable truths about ourselves. Only then can we build a solid foundation of self-assurance that is grounded in reality, rather than fantasy. This is the path to true confidence - a journey of self-discovery and growth that requires courage and humility in equal measure.
