Consider multiple perspectives from "summary" of Perfectly Confident by Don A. Moore
When we only consider our own perspective, we run the risk of falling victim to what psychologists call the "egocentric bias." This bias leads us to believe that our own point of view is the only one that matters, and that others see things the same way we do. This can lead to faulty decision-making, as we fail to take into account the perspectives of others who may have valuable insights or information that we lack. Considering multiple perspectives involves actively seeking out and taking into account the viewpoints of others, especially those who may have different backgrounds, experiences, or expertise than our own. By doing so, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of a situation, problem, or decision, and make more informed choices as a result. One way to consider multiple perspectives is to engage in what psychologists call "perspective-taking." This involves putting ourselves in someone else's shoes and trying to see the world from their point of view. By doing so, we can gain empathy for others and better understand their motivations, beliefs, and desires. Another way to consider multiple perspectives is to actively seek out diverse viewpoints and information. This can involve consulting with experts in relevant fields, soliciting feedback from colleagues or mentors, or conducting research to gather different opinions and data. By doing so, we can challenge our own assumptions and biases, and make more well-rounded decisions.- As it can be uncomfortable to challenge our own beliefs or to admit that we may not have all the answers. However, by doing so, we can increase our confidence in our decisions, as we know that we have taken into account a wide range of viewpoints and information. Ultimately, considering multiple perspectives can lead to better outcomes and more successful decision-making.
