Hercules' twelve labors from "summary" of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Hercules is an immortal hero from Greek mythology who fulfilled a series of difficult tasks. His twelve labors, which included slaying monsters, capturing animals and cleaning out a filthy stable, tested his strength, courage and resourcefulness.- Hercules is a part of Greek Mythology and he was famous for his Twelve Labors. These were twelve difficult tasks which he completed with great determination!
- The first labor of Hercules was to slay the Nemean Lion, which was a fearsome monster that could not be killed by mortals. Hercules achieved this feat by strangling it with his bare hands!
- His third labor was a stout challenge indeed – to capture the Erymanthean Boar, a wild pig which roamed around Mount Erymanthos. Although this task was a lot tougher than the second one, Hercules managed to tame it.
- The fourth labor was to clean the Augean stables in a single day, of course Hercules accepted the challenge and was able to do it. He diverted two rivers so that they flushed out the stables with their mighty force.
- The eleventh labor was arguably the most difficult one yet. He had to obtain the golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides. It took him many days to get there, and once he arrived, Atlas, the guardian refused to give him the apples. Eventually, Hercules convinced Atlas to help him in exchange for being temporary relieved of the burden of carrying the sky on his shoulders.
- He next encountered a nine headed Hydra, which was a dangerous creature which regenerated every time one of its head was cut off. Hercules destroyed it by burning each of its heads and using flaming arrows to keep the fire ablaze.
- Then came a very interesting labor - to steal the giant belt from Hippolyta — the Amazon Queen. Hercules initially tried to get the belt as a gift, but she refused. Luckily, Athena (Goddess of wisdom. helped him out, and he was able to take it without any bloodshed.
- For his tenth labor, Heracles had to bring back the three-headed guard dog of Hades otherwise known as the Cerberus. This was no easy feat considering how strong Cerberus was. But Heracles was still able to tame it, thus succeeding in his mission.
- After completing all the previous labors, Heracles then set upon the task of taming the man-eating horses of Diomedes. He managed to accomplish it after calming them down and feeding them human flesh.
- His second labor was a considerably easier one, as he had to capture the Ceryneian Hind which was just an exceptionally swift deer. He did this by chasing it for months until he finally caught it.
- For his eighth labor, Heracles had to bring back the four herds of red cattle formerly owned by Geryon. Geryon was a three-headed beast but Heracles won the battle and made his way to the Isles of Erytheia where the cattle were located.
- As his final labor, Heracles had to kill the eagle which fed on Prometheus’ liver. The eagle just happened to be invulnerable earlier but eventually, Heracles conquered it with his bravery and strength.
