Reacher was driving down the dark two-lane highway, heading towards the motel he had carefully chosen before setting out on his journey. He had checked the reviews online, read about the amenities it offered, and even called ahead to reserve a room. But as he approached the motel, something seemed off. The windows were all covered with plywood, and the once welcoming neon sign was now dark and flickering.
Confused, Reacher parked his car and got out to investigate. He walked up to the front door and tried to push it open, but it wouldn't budge. Looking closer, he saw that the door was not only locked but also boarded up from the inside. It was as if the motel had been hastily abandoned, with no warning or explanation.
