Types of paper coatings from "summary" of Paper Chemistry by J.C. Roberts
Paper coatings are a great way to improve the look, feel and durability of paper. They can be used to make paper glossy, matte, waterproof, tear-resistant or even heat sealable. There are many types of coatings available, each offering a unique set of benefits.- There are four major kinds of paper coating – matte, silk, gloss and textured finish. Each one provides a unique look and feel to pieces of paper and sometimes all 4 type of coatings are used in the same paper.
- In addition, some special paper coatings such as heat-set coatings and UV coatings can be applied on paper. Heat set coating is mainly used for high quality magazines due to its superior fastness characteristics and smooth appearance.
- Gloss coating make paper glossy so that it reflects lights, giving additional brightness to colours on the sheet. Textured finishes add tactile qualities and also protect the printed image from creasing, scratching, fingerprints etc.
- Matte paper provide opacity and good colour brilliancy which makes an excellent choice for printing books covers or brochures whilejpg image files. Silk (or Satin) coats offer light sheen that adds richness to printed colours.
- UV coating offers extraordinary protection from fingerprints to any kind of paper products. It is generally applied after printing process is finished and then a certain amount of energy is supplied to cause a chemical reaction in the material adding a strong shine, resistance and softness.
