Pressure of expectations weighed heavy from "summary" of Open: An Autobiography by Andre Agassi
The weight of expectations can be unbearable. It’s like carrying a burden that never seems to lighten. Every match, every tournament, every point - all of it comes with the pressure of living up to what others expect of you. And it’s not just the fans and the media, it’s yourself too. You start to believe that you have to be perfect, that anything less is a failure. The pressure builds with each win, each title. People expect more from you because they have seen what you are capable of. They want you to keep performing at that level, to keep winning, to keep being the best. But what they don’t see is the toll it takes on you. The sleepless nights, the self-doubt, the fear of not being able to meet those expectations. It’s a lonely place to be, trapped in a cycle of needing to prove yourself over and over again. The more you win, the higher the expectations become. And when you start to falter, when you can’t meet those expectations, the fall is that much harder. You feel like you have disappointed everyone, like you have let them down. But the truth is, the only person you are truly letting down is yourself. You are the one who has to live with the weight of those expectations, day in and day out. And it’s exhausting. It drains you of the joy of playing the game, of doing what you love. It turns something that should be fun into a constant struggle to measure up. And so you find yourself caught in a vicious cycle, trying to meet expectations that are impossible to satisfy. It’s a never-ending battle, one that can consume you if you let it. The key is to remember that those expectations are not who you are. They are just a shadow of what others want you to be. And it’s up to you to break free from that shadow, to play for yourself and no one else.Similar Posts
