Trust is a rare commodity in Oceania from "summary" of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

Trust, that elusive quality that forms the foundation of human relationships, is a rare commodity in the oppressive regime of Oceania. In this dystopian society, suspicion and betrayal permeate every interaction, creating an atmosphere of fear and paranoia. Big Brother, the all-seeing, all-knowing leader, instills a sense of constant surveillance among the citizens, making it impossible to truly trust anyone, even one's closest allies. The Party's manipulation of information further erodes trust, as history is constantly rewritten to suit their narrative. With no reliable records or concrete truths to anchor themselves to, individuals are left adrift in a sea of lies and deceit. Even language itself is twisted to undermine trust, with words like "doublethink" and "newspeak" used to blur the lines between reality and fiction. In such a world, genuine connections between people become nearly impossible. Winston, the protagonist, struggles to trust even the woman he loves, knowing that their every move is being monitored by the Thought Police. The concept of loyalty is warped beyond recognition, with children encouraged to betray their parents and friends to report any hint of dissent.
  1. The lack of trust in Oceania serves to perpetuate the Party's control over its citizens. By keeping individuals isolated and distrustful of one another, they ensure that no organized resistance can form. In a society where truth is malleable and trust is a luxury few can afford, the only certainty is that the cycle of betrayal and oppression will continue unabated.
