The Party enforces conformity through fear from "summary" of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell

The Party maintains control over its citizens by instilling fear in their hearts. This fear is not just of physical pain or death, but of the unknown consequences that come with disobedience. The citizens of Oceania are constantly reminded of the Party's power through propaganda, surveillance, and punishment. Those who dare to defy the Party are swiftly dealt with, disappearing without a trace. This creates a sense of uncertainty and paranoia amongst the population, making them hesitant to step out of line. The Party's methods of enforcing conformity are insidious and all-encompassing. From the telescreens that watch your every move to the Thought Police that can read your very thoughts, there is no escaping the Party's reach. Even in the privacy of one's own home, one must be careful not to show any signs of dissent. The constant threat of being reported by a neighbor or even a family member keeps everyone in line, afraid to trust anyone but Big Brother. The Party's manipulation of history and language further cements its control over the minds of its citizens. By controlling the past, the Party is able to control the present and shape the future. Any dissenting opinions or even memories are swiftly erased, replaced with the Party's version of reality. This linguistic manipulation, known as Newspeak, limits the ability of the citizens to even think rebellious thoughts, as the words to express them have been stripped from the language.
  1. Conformity is not just a choice, but a survival mechanism. To go against the Party is to invite torture, betrayal, and ultimately, death. The fear of these consequences keeps the citizens in line, obediently following the Party's every command. It is a bleak existence, where individuality is crushed and free thought is a dangerous luxury. The Party's grip on power is absolute, enforced through fear and maintained by the collective submission of its citizens.
