The periodic table arranges elements based on their properties from "summary" of NCERT Chemistry Class 11 - [CBSE Board] by Dr. S. C. Rastogi, ,Er. Meera Goyal

The periodic table is a tool that organizes all known elements based on their properties. This arrangement allows scientists to easily identify trends and patterns among the elements. One important property used to organize the elements in the periodic table is their atomic number. This number represents the number of protons found in the nucleus of an atom of that element. Elements in the periodic table are organized in rows and columns. Each row is called a period, and each column is called a group. Elements in the same group have similar properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outermost energy level. This similarity in properties is due to the elements' electronic configuration. When elements are arranged in the periodic table, their properties vary in a periodic manner. This periodicity is a result of the repeating patterns in the electron configurations of the elements. For example, elements in the same group tend to have similar reactivity because they have the same number of valence electrons. Valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom, and they are involved in chemical reactions. The periodic table also allows scientists to predict the properties of elements that have not yet been discovered. By observing the trends and patterns in the table, scientists can make educated guesses about how these unknown elements will behave. This predictive power of the periodic table has been instrumental in the discovery of new elements and the development of new technologies.
