Surface chemistry studies interfaces between phases from "summary" of NCERT Chemistry Class 11 - [CBSE Board] by Dr. S. C. Rastogi, ,Er. Meera Goyal
Surface chemistry is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of interfaces between different phases. These interfaces can be between solid-liquid, liquid-gas, or solid-gas phases. The study of these interfaces is crucial because it helps us understand the interactions that occur at the molecular level when two different phases come into contact with each other. One of the key aspects of surface chemistry is the concept of surface tension. Surface tension is the tendency of a liquid surface to minimize its surface area, which results in the formation of droplets or beads. This phenomenon is due to the cohesive forces between the molecules in the liquid, which are stronger than the adhesive forces between the liquid and the surface it comes into contact with. Another important concept in surface chemistry is adsorption. Adsorption is the process by which molecules or ions from a gas, liquid, or solution adhere to a solid surface. This process is influenced by factors such as the nature of the adsorbate and adsorbent, temperature, pressure, and concentration of the adsorbate. Surface chemistry also plays a crucial role in catalysis. Catalysis is the process of increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by the presence of a substance known as a catalyst. Catalysts work by providing an alternative pathway for the reaction to occur, which lowers the activation energy required for the reaction to take place. The surface area of a catalyst is an important factor that influences its catalytic activity.- Surface chemistry is a fascinating field of study that delves into the interactions that occur at the interfaces between different phases. By understanding these interactions, scientists can develop new materials, improve industrial processes, and gain insights into the behavior of molecules at the molecular level.
