Weakness exploitation from "summary" of Modern Chess Strategy by Ludek Pachman

Weak squares and other weaknesses in the opponent's position are valuable only in so far as they can be exploited. The most common way of doing this is by attacking the weak points with pieces or pawns. In the course of the attack, the enemy pieces can be driven away, permitting a further advance. In other words, attacking the weak points often leads to the creation of new weak points which can be exploited in their turn. The player who has weak points in his camp must not only defend them but also be prepared to counterattack. An attack against a weak point may be parried by a counterattack against another weak point. This is a good method of defending because it puts pressure on the enemy position.
