Fixed mindset limits growth from "summary" of Mindset: A Atitude Mental para o Sucesso - Edição Revista e Aumentada by Carol Dweck
In the fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong. In the growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports. It enhances relationships. When you enter a mindset, you enter a new world. In one world—the world of fixed traits—success is about proving you’re smart or talented. Validating yourself. In the other—the world of changing qualities—success is about stretching yourself to learn something new. Developing yourself. In the growth mindset, failure is about learning. This doesn’t mean we keep telling kids “Just do your best” until they’re convinced they’re Einstein. No, we need to tell them what they did well, but we also need to give them a plan for what to do next. In the growth mindset, it’s not just about praising effort. It’s about teaching strategy. Not just telling a child, “You did a great job,” but teaching the child how to think or what to do next. How does this work in the real world? We can all see that in the sports world. People in a fixed mindset may not admit they’re cheating, but they’re not about to point out when their friends or teammates are cheating. And if they think they can get away with it, they will cheat too. In the growth mindset, cheating may be part of the landscape, but it is not a defining feature. People in a growth mindset were no more likely to cheat when they could get away with it. They knew it was unfair. You still have to work hard to accomplish things. But you don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to be the best. And it means you’re not always right and you don’t have to win every argument. Instead of trying to correct every mistake and cover up every flaw, learn how to ask for feedback and learn from it. This is the path to success.Similar Posts
