Mindfulness is not a belief system. It is not a dogma or a doctrine. It is not something you have to follow. It is a practical approach to life that anyone can utilize. Mindfulness is the quality and power of mind that is deeply aware of what's happening—without commentary or interference. It is like a mirror that simply reflects whatever comes before it. It is the mental ability to clearly perceive the true nature of all phenomena. Mindfulness can be cultivated through meditation practice. It is not some sort of mystical attainment available only to the privileged few. It is not even particularly difficult to cultivate. It simply requires a sincere intention to be mindful. You can learn to pay attention to the present moment and simply be aware of what is happening. You can learn to observe your mind and its activities. You can learn to watch your thoughts and feelings without becoming lost in them. Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment. It is about experiencing life as it unfolds, without getting caught up in the past or future. When you are mindful, you are fully engaged with whatever you are doing—whether it is eating, walking, working, or talking. You are not distracted by regrets about the past or worries about the future. You are fully alive in the present moment. The more you practice mindfulness, the more you will begin to see the world as it truly is. You will begin to see the impermanence of all things. You will begin to see the interconnectedness of all things. You will begin to see the causes and conditions that give rise to suffering. You will begin to see the way out of suffering. Mindfulness is the key to unlocking the door to true happiness and freedom.
