Be mindful of our speech and interactions with others from "summary" of Mindfulness in Plain English by Henepola Gunaratana

When we speak and interact with others, we must do so with mindfulness. Our words have the power to uplift or destroy, to create harmony or discord. Every word we utter has an impact, not only on others but also on ourselves. When we speak harshly or unkindly, we are planting seeds of negativity that will bear bitter fruit in the future. On the other hand, when we speak with kindness and compassion, we are sowing the seeds of positivity and creating a harmonious environment for ourselves and others. Mindfulness in speech means being aware of our words before we speak them. It means pausing to consider the impact of our words and whether they are true, necessary, and beneficial. It also means being aware of our tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions, as these too can convey messages to others. By being mindful of our speech, we can avoid saying things that we may later regret and cultivate positive relationships with those around us. Similarly, mindfulness in interactions with others means being fully present in the moment and giving our full attention to the person we are interacting with. It means listening with empathy and understanding, rather than simply waiting for our turn to speak. By being present and attentive in our interactions, we can foster deeper connections with others and build trust and respect. When we are mindful in our speech and interactions, we create a space for understanding and compassion to flourish. We become more attuned to the needs and feelings of others, and we can respond with kindness and empathy. By cultivating mindfulness in our communication, we can create a more harmonious and peaceful world for ourselves and those around us.
