Learning to observe thoughts without attachment can reduce anxiety from "summary" of Mindfulness for Teen Anxiety by Christopher Willard

When we experience anxiety, our minds can become overwhelmed with thoughts that seem to spiral out of control. We might find ourselves caught up in worries about the future, regrets about the past, or fears about the present. These thoughts can feel like they have a life of their own, dragging us along for the ride and leaving us feeling powerless. It's like being trapped in a tangled web of our own making, unable to break free. Learning to observe our thoughts without getting caught up in them can be a powerful tool for reducing anxiety. When we practice mindfulness, we develop the ability to step back and simply notice our thoughts as they arise, without judgment or attachment. Instead of getting swept away by our worries, we can observe them with a sense of curiosity and openness. This shift in perspective allows us to see our thoughts for what they are – just thoughts, not necessarily reflections of reality. By cultivating this non-attached awareness of our thoughts, we create a space between ourselves and our anxiety. Rather than being consumed by our worries, we can see them from a distance, like clouds passing across the sky. This distance gives us the freedom to choose how we respond to our thoughts, rather than reacting automatically out of fear or habit. We can decide whether to engage with a particular thought or simply let it go, recognizing that it is not who we are. As we practice observing our thoughts without attachment, we develop a greater sense of inner calm and resilience. We learn that our thoughts do not define us or dictate our experience – they are just one aspect of our mental landscape. This awareness can help us break free from the grip of anxiety, enabling us to navigate life's challenges with greater ease and clarity. By letting go of our attachment to our thoughts, we open up space for peace, acceptance, and freedom.
