Factors are numbers that divide another number exactly from "summary" of Maths Mate – 6 NEW by Madhubun

Factors are those numbers that can be divided into another number without leaving a remainder. In simpler terms, factors are what we get when we multiply two or more numbers together to get a product. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 because these numbers can be multiplied in different combinations to give 12. It is important to note that every number has at least two factors - 1 and itself. These are known as the "trivial factors" of a number. For instance, the factors of 7 are 1 and 7, because 1 multiplied by 7 gives 7. Similarly, the factors of 11 are 1 and 11, as multiplying 1 by 11 also gives 11. When we talk about factors, we often refer to "prime factors" and "composite factors." Prime factors are those numbers that have only two factors - 1 and the number itself. For example, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 are all prime numbers because they can only be divided by 1 and the number itself. On the other hand, composite factors have more than two factors, such as 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10. Understanding factors is essential in mathematics as it helps in simplifying calculations and solving mathematical problems. By identifying the factors of a number, we can easily find the common factors between two or more numbers, which can be useful in various mathematical operations like finding the greatest common factor or simplifying fractions. Therefore, factors play a crucial role in mathematical calculations and problem-solving.
