After many years of traveling in the East, Marco Polo finally made his way back to Venice, his hometown. However, his return did not go as planned. Upon arriving in Venice, Polo found himself caught in the midst of a war that was raging through the city. The conflict was between the Republic of Venice and the Republic of Genoa, two powerful maritime states competing for dominance in the region. Polo, unfortunately, became a casualty of war when he was captured by the Genoese forces. He was taken prisoner and held captive for several months, enduring harsh conditions and uncertain fate. The once great explorer now found himself confined and powerless, far from the exotic lands he had traversed and the grand adventures he had experienced.
