Set clear expectations and consequences from "summary" of Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood by Jim Fay,Charles Fay

When dealing with young children, it is crucial to establish clear expectations and consequences. Children thrive when they know what is expected of them and what will happen if those expectations are not met. Without this clarity, children may feel confused and anxious, leading to challenging behaviors. Setting clear expectations means clearly communicating to children what behavior is acceptable and what is not. This can be done through simple and direct language that is easy for children to understand. For example, instead of saying, "Be good," you could say, "Use gentle hands," or "Walk, please." Along with setting expectations, it is important to establish consequences for both positive and negative behavior. Consequences should be logical and related to the behavior in question. For example, if a child refuses to clean up their toys, a logical consequence may be that they lose the privilege of playing with those toys for a period of time. Consistency is key when it comes to enforcing expectations and consequences. Children need to know that the rules will be the same every time, regardless of the situation. This consistency helps children feel secure and understand the boundaries that have been set for them. Transition words and phrases can be used to help children understand the connection between their behavior and the consequences that follow. For example, saying, "Because you chose to hit your sister, you have lost the privilege of watching TV," helps children make the connection between their actions and the resulting consequence. By setting clear expectations and consequences, parents and caregivers can create a structured and predictable environment for young children. This helps children feel safe and secure, knowing what is expected of them and what will happen if those expectations are not met.
