The negotiations for my release began in earnest in March 1989. For almost four years, I had been corresponding with the government through Kobie Coetsee, the Minister of Justice. Our meetings had been sporadic, but we had managed to establish a level of trust between us. Our discussions were always cordial, and we both understood that we were working towards a common goal – my freedom. Over the course of those years, we had managed to make some progress. The government had agreed to certain conditions, such as allowing me to be moved from Victor Verster Prison to a house in Cape Town.
