Throughout my life, I have come to understand the importance of seeing the humanity in every individual, regardless of their background or beliefs. This understanding, rooted in empathy and compassion, has guided me in my journey towards freedom and reconciliation. When I was imprisoned for 27 years, I had ample time to reflect on the injustices I faced and witnessed. My experiences taught me that to truly bring about change, we must first seek to understand and empathize with those who have hurt us. By showing compassion even towards our oppressors, we can break the cycle of hatred and violence that perpetuates conflict. During my presidency, I worked tirelessly to promote reconciliation and unity in a country torn apart by apartheid.
