Education as key to development from "summary" of Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. I knew that if I did not go to school and learn to read and write, I would forever be trapped in the circumstances of my birth, and that if I were not able to go to school, I would never be able to escape the poverty and oppression that plagued my people. Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another. I was no exception. If I had not had a chance to attend school, I would never have been able to lead my people in the struggle for freedom. Education is the great engine of personal development.
