Addressing social inequality from "summary" of Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela

Addressing social inequality was a central focus of our struggle. We understood that a society where one group dominates another can never be truly free. In South Africa, the system of apartheid entrenched social inequality in every aspect of life. It was a brutal and dehumanizing system that sought to divide us based on race and oppress the majority for the benefit of a minority. To address social inequality, we needed to dismantle apartheid and build a new, democratic society based on equality and justice. This required both political and social transformation. Politically, we had to challenge the apartheid regime and its discriminatory laws through nonviolent resistance and international pressure. Socially, we had to change the hearts and minds of people to see each other as equals and to work together for the common good. Education played a crucial role in this process, as it empowered people to understand the injustices of apartheid and to envision a different future. Economic inequality was another critical aspect of social inequality that we had to address. Under apartheid, the majority of black South Africans were relegated to the lowest rungs of society, with limited access to education, jobs, and economic opportunities. This perpetuated a cycle of poverty and deprivation that kept people trapped in a vicious cycle of inequality. To tackle economic inequality, we needed to create a more inclusive economy that provided opportunities for all South Africans to prosper. This required policies that promoted economic growth, job creation, and wealth redistribution to uplift those who had been marginalized under apartheid.
  1. Addressing social inequality was a complex and multifaceted process that required a comprehensive approach. It involved political, social, and economic reforms to create a more just and equitable society for all. It was a long and difficult journey, but it was a journey worth taking for the sake of our nation's future.
