When we communicate with our teams, we often inadvertently use language that can stifle creativity and innovation. This happens when we ask closed-ended questions or make statements that suggest there is only one correct answer. By doing so, we limit the range of possibilities that our team members consider, ultimately hindering their ability to come up with new and innovative ideas.
For example, when we ask a question like, "Do you think we should proceed with Plan A or Plan B?" we are framing the options in a binary way that constrains thinking. Instead, we could ask an open-ended question like, "What are some different approaches we could take to address this challenge?" This encourages our team members to think more broadly and explore a wider range of solutions.
