Avoid language that sets limits on creativity and innovation from "summary" of Leadership Is Language by L. David Marquet
When we communicate with our teams, we often inadvertently use language that can stifle creativity and innovation. This happens when we ask closed-ended questions or make statements that suggest there is only one correct answer. By doing so, we limit the range of possibilities that our team members consider, ultimately hindering their ability to come up with new and innovative ideas. For example, when we ask a question like, "Do you think we should proceed with Plan A or Plan B?" we are framing the options in a binary way that constrains thinking. Instead, we could ask an open-ended question like, "What are some different approaches we could take to address this challenge?" This encourages our team members to think more broadly and explore a wider range of solutions. Similarly, when we make statements like, "This is the way we've always done it," we are signaling to our team members that deviation from the status quo is not welcome. This can lead to a culture of conformity where creativity and innovation are suppressed. Instead, we could say something like, "Let's explore some new ways of approaching this problem and see what we come up with." This communicates a willingness to consider different perspectives and encourages experimentation. By being mindful of the language we use, we can create an environment that fosters creativity and innovation. This means asking open-ended questions, avoiding binary choices, and being open to new ideas. When our team members feel empowered to think creatively and take risks, they are more likely to come up with innovative solutions that can drive our organization forward. Let's strive to communicate in a way that encourages creativity and innovation, rather than constraining it.Similar Posts
