On the other hand, those in subordinate positions often use language that is more deferential, polite, and accommodating, reflecting their lower status and the need to show respect and deference to those in higher positions. These linguistic behaviors are not simply a matter of personal style or preference; rather, they are shaped by the organizational culture and norms that dictate how individuals should communicate with one another based on their respective roles and positions within the hierarchy. As a result, language becomes a tool through which power relations are enacted and maintained in the workplace.
