Language at work reflects social hierarchies and power structures from "summary" of Language in Business, Language at Work by Erika Darics,Veronika Koller

The language used in a workplace setting is not neutral; it carries with it power dynamics and social hierarchies that shape interactions and relationships within the organization. These power structures are embedded in the language choices made by individuals at different levels of the hierarchy, reflecting their relative status and authority within the organization. For example, individuals in positions of power tend to use language that is more assertive, direct, and authoritative, reinforcing their dominance and control over others in the workplace. On the other hand, those in subordinate positions often use language that is more deferential, polite, and accommodating, reflecting their lower status and the need to show respect and deference to those in higher positions. These linguistic behaviors are not simply a matter of personal style or preference; rather, they are shaped by the organizational culture and norms that dictate how individuals should communicate with one another based on their respective roles and positions within the hierarchy. As a result, language becomes a tool through which power relations are enacted and maintained in the workplace. Moreover, the language used in a professional setting can also serve to exclude certain individuals or groups from fully participating in organizational life. For example, the use of jargon, technical language, or insider terms can create barriers to communication for those who are not familiar with or do not have access to this specialized knowledge.
  1. The language at work reflects and reinforces the social hierarchies and power structures that exist within the organization, shaping not only how individuals communicate with one another but also how power is enacted and maintained in the workplace. By understanding these dynamics, individuals can become more aware of how language shapes their interactions and relationships at work, and work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable organizational culture.
