The United States has a long and sordid history of backing dictators in Latin America. The rationale behind this support often stemmed from the fear of communism spreading in the region. The US government believed that supporting dictators who were anti-communist would help to prevent the rise of leftist governments that could potentially align with the Soviet Union. One such dictator was Anastasio Somoza in Nicaragua. Somoza was a ruthless dictator who ruled the country with an iron fist, but he was a staunch anti-communist. The US government provided him with military aid and support, turning a blind eye to his human rights abuses in the name of fighting communism. This support for Somoza continued even as his regime became more corrupt and oppressive.
