US foreign policy perpetuates violence from "summary" of Killing Hope by William Blum
The United States government has a long and sordid history of engaging in violent actions in the name of foreign policy. From covert operations to overt military interventions, the US has consistently used force to achieve its political goals around the world. One of the most glaring examples of this violent foreign policy is the overthrow of democratically elected governments that are deemed unfriendly to US interests. This practice, known as regime change, has been used in countries like Iran, Guatemala, Chile, and countless others. The US has supported coups, assassinations, and rebellions in order to install leaders who are more amenable to American influence. Furthermore, the US has a disturbing habit of arming and supporting repressive regimes that commit human rights abuses. From military aid to training programs, the US has propped up dictators and strongmen who brutalize their own people. This support not only perpetuates violence within these countries but also undermines democracy and human rights on a global scale. In addition to supporting oppressive governments, the US has also directly engaged in military interventions that have resulted in widespread death and destruction. From Vietnam to Iraq, the US has waged wars that have claimed the lives of millions of innocent civilians. These wars are often justified under the guise of spreading democracy or combating terrorism, but the reality is that they only serve to perpetuate violence and instability.- The US foreign policy of interventionism and militarism has had devastating consequences for countless people around the world. By prioritizing its own interests over the well-being of others, the US has perpetuated a cycle of violence that shows no sign of abating. It is clear that a fundamental shift in foreign policy is needed in order to break this cycle and promote peace and justice on a global scale.
