In 1953, the United States orchestrated a coup in Iran that ousted the democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadegh. This event, known as Operation Ajax, had far-reaching consequences that continue to shape the political landscape of the Middle East to this day. The coup was carried out at the behest of British oil interests, who were concerned about Mossadegh's nationalization of the oil industry. The CIA, in collaboration with British intelligence, worked to undermine Mossadegh's government through a propaganda campaign and covert operations. The removal of Mossadegh paved the way for the reinstatement of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was a staunch ally of the United States. Under the Shah's rule, Iran became a repressive dictatorship marked by human rights abuses and political repression.
