It can be a weapon or a shield, a tool for oppression or liberation. Growing up in South Africa, I learned early on the power of language. In a country torn apart by apartheid, where people were divided by race, language was used as a weapon to enforce segregation and control. The government imposed strict language laws that dictated who could speak what language, where and when. It was a way of maintaining power and control over the population, of dividing and conquering. But language was also a tool of resistance and rebellion. In a society where speaking out against the government could get you killed, people found ways to communicate in secret, using coded language and hidden messages to organize and mobilize.
