Growing up in South Africa, I quickly learned that life was not going to be easy. Being born to a Black mother and a White father during apartheid meant that I was a crime simply by existing. I faced countless challenges and obstacles from a young age, but I knew that I had to be resilient in order to survive. One of the key ways I learned to navigate the harsh realities of my environment was through the use of wit. I discovered early on that humor could be a powerful tool in diffusing tense situations and gaining the upper hand.
