In my life, I have had the unfortunate privilege of experiencing racism and discrimination firsthand. It's not something I chose, but it's something I had to endure because of the color of my skin. I remember walking down the street with my mother and feeling the stares and the whispers. I remember not being able to go certain places because I wasn't welcome there. I remember feeling like an outsider in my own country, simply because I looked different. Growing up in South Africa during the time of apartheid, racism was not just a part of life - it was the law. I was born to a black mother and a white father, which was illegal under the laws of the time. I was considered a crime simply by existing. I couldn't be seen in public with my father, and my mother had to pretend to be my maid when we were out together. It was a constant reminder that I was different, that I didn't belong.
