Communist control from "summary" of Iron Curtain by Anne Applebaum

Communist control was a central tenet of the Soviet Union's ideology. The Communist Party aimed to control every aspect of society, from the economy to culture to personal beliefs. This control was achieved through a combination of propaganda, censorship, and surveillance. The party's goal was to create a "new Soviet man" who would be loyal to the state above all else. To achieve this goal, the Communists established a vast network of informers and secret police. These agencies monitored the population for any signs of dissent or disloyalty. Those who were deemed to be enemies of the state were swiftly dealt with, often through imprisonment or execution. The party also sought to control the economy through central planning. All major industries were nationalized, and production quotas were set by the state. The goal was to create a socialist economy in which wealth was distributed equally among the population. However, this system often led to inefficiency and shortages of basic goods. In addition to controlling the economy and society, the Communists also sought to control culture and education. Artists and writers were expected to produce works that promoted Communist ideology, while schools were used to indoctrinate children in the party's beliefs.
  1. Communist control was a pervasive force in the Soviet Union and its satellite states. It sought to shape every aspect of life according to the party's vision, creating a society in which individual freedoms were heavily restricted in the name of the collective good.
