Women's lives are devalued by gender data gaps from "summary" of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez

One of the key reasons women’s lives are devalued is due to gender data gaps. These data gaps exist because much of the data we have historically collected has been based on men, leading to a lack of information about women. This lack of data on women has serious consequences, as it means that policy makers and businesses are making decisions based on incomplete information. For example, when designing cars, manufacturers often use crash test dummies based on the ‘average’ male body. As a result, women are 47% more likely to be seriously injured in a car crash. This is just one example of how gender data gaps can have real-world consequences for women’s lives. Another area where gender data gaps have serious implications is in healthcare. For many years, medical research has focused primarily on men, leading to a lack of understanding about how diseases and treatments affect women differently. This has resulted in misdiagnoses and inappropriate treatments for women, putting their health at risk. Even in the workplace, gender data gaps can have a negative impact on women. For example, when it comes to pay equity, many companies claim to have closed the gender pay gap based on incomplete data. By only looking at overall averages, they fail to account for the fact that women are often clustered in lower-paying jobs or are more likely to work part-time.
  1. Gender data gaps have far-reaching effects on women’s lives, from their safety on the roads to their health outcomes and economic well-being. It is crucial that we address these data gaps and ensure that women are represented in the data that shapes our policies and decisions.
