Gender data bias leads to safety risks for women from "summary" of Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez

Gender data bias has real-world consequences, particularly when it comes to women's safety. When information is missing or inadequate, decisions and policies are made based on incomplete data, putting women at risk. For example, crash test dummies used in car safety testing are based on the "average male" body, leading to cars that are less safe for women. This bias is not limited to car safety - even in the design of protective gear such as bulletproof vests and helmets, women are often left out of the equation, making them more vulnerable in dangerous situations. Furthermore, the lack of gender-disaggregated data in healthcare can lead to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment for women. For instance, heart attack symptoms in women are often different from those in men, but because medical research has historically focused on men, these differences are not well understood. As a result, women are more likely to be misdiagnosed or have their symptoms dismissed, putting their health and lives at risk. In the realm of public safety, gender data bias can have dire consequences for women. For example, emergency response systems are often designed without considering women's specific needs and vulnerabilities. This can lead to delays in response times or inadequate support during emergencies, putting women in potentially dangerous situations.
  1. Gender data bias perpetuates a cycle of neglect and invisibility for women, leaving them more vulnerable to safety risks. It is crucial to recognize and address this bias in order to create a more equitable and safe world for women. By ensuring that data collection and analysis are gender-sensitive, we can begin to bridge the gaps in knowledge and understanding that put women at risk.
