Language shapes our understanding of being from "summary" of Introduction to Metaphysics by Martin Heidegger

Language is not simply a tool for communication, but rather a fundamental aspect of our existence. It is through language that we come to understand the world around us and our place within it. In this sense, language is not just a means of expressing preexisting thoughts, but rather a medium through which our thoughts are formed and shaped. When we speak or write, we are not simply conveying ideas that already exist within us. Rather, the act of articulating these ideas in language actually shapes and structures our understanding of them. Language is not just a passive vessel for our thoughts, but an active force that shapes the very contours of our thinking. In this way, our understanding of being is deeply intertwined with the language we use to articulate it. Different languages offer different ways of conceptualizing the world, and as a result, different linguistic traditions can lead to radically different understandings of being. For example, in some languages, the distinction between subject and object is not as rigid as it is in others. This can lead to a more fluid and interconnected understanding of the world, where boundaries between self and other are not as sharply defined. Similarly, the structure of a language can shape our understanding of time, space, and causality. For instance, languages that do not have tenses may lead to a more cyclical understanding of time, where past, present, and future are not so clearly delineated.
  1. Our understanding of being is not something that exists independently of language, but is rather deeply intertwined with it. Language is not just a tool we use to express our thoughts, but a medium through which our thoughts are formed and shaped. As such, the language we use plays a crucial role in shaping our understanding of being and the world around us.
