Love starts with oneself from "summary" of Intimacy by Osho

Love is not something that can be given or received from others unless it first exists within oneself. The foundation of love is self-love. Without loving oneself, it is impossible to truly love another. This is not about being selfish or self-centered, but about recognizing one's own worth and embracing one's own uniqueness. When one lacks self-love, they may seek love and validation from external sources, leading to dependency and insecurity. This is a never-ending cycle of seeking approval from others to feel complete. However, true love cannot come from outside; it must come from within. It is only when one fully accepts and loves themselves that they can truly love others unconditionally. Self-love is not about being arrogant or narcissistic, but about recognizing one's own value and treating oneself with kindness and compassion. It is about being authentic and true to oneself, rather than trying to fit into society's expectations or seeking validation from others. When one loves themselves, they are able to set healthy boundaries, prioritize their own well-being, and make choices that align with their values and desires. By cultivating self-love, one can experience a sense of wholeness and inner peace that is not dependent on external circumstances. This inner sense of love and acceptance creates a strong foundation for building healthy and fulfilling relationships with others. When one loves themselves, they are able to love others more deeply and authentically, without expecting them to fill a void or meet their unmet needs.
  1. Self-love is the key to unlocking the capacity for love in all its forms. It is the starting point for creating meaningful connections with others and experiencing true intimacy. Without self-love, one may never fully experience the depth and beauty of love that is possible. It is only when one learns to love themselves completely that they can truly love others in a profound and authentic way.
