Nonstate actors from "summary" of International Relations: The Key Concepts by Martin Griffiths,Terry O'Callaghan

Nonstate actors are entities that operate outside the realm of traditional state structures, yet play a significant role in shaping international relations. These actors can take various forms, such as multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations, terrorist groups, and international organizations. They wield influence through their ability to mobilize resources, shape public opinion, and engage in activities that impact global politics. Multinational corporations, for example, have the power to transcend borders and operate in multiple countries simultaneously. They can influence governments through economic incentives, lobbying efforts, and shaping policy agendas. Non-governmental organizations, on the other hand, are often driven by humanitarian or advocacy purposes and work to address global issues such as human rights abuses, environmental degradation, and poverty. Terrorist groups pose a unique challenge to the international system, as they operate outside the boundaries of traditional state behavior and use violence to achieve their objectives. These groups can destabilize regions, instill fear in populations, and challenge state authority. International organizations, such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, play a key role in fostering cooperation among states, providing humanitarian assistance, and promoting global governance. Nonstate actors have become increasingly influential in shaping international relations due to globalization, technological advancements, and the changing nature of conflict. They challenge the traditional Westphalian state-centric system by introducing new dynamics and power structures. As such, understanding the role of nonstate actors is essential for grasping the complexities of contemporary international politics.
