Virgil explains the reasons for their punishments from "summary" of Inferno by Dante Alighieri

Virgil took me through the circles of Hell, showing me the torments of the damned. As we descended further into the depths, I saw souls suffering in various ways, each punishment befitting their sins. Virgil, my guide in this dark realm, explained to me the reasons for their punishments. He elucidated how the severity of their torment corresponded to the gravity of their transgressions. In the circle of the Lustful, I witnessed souls being tossed about by fierce winds, forever denied rest or peace. Virgil informed me that these souls were being punished for giving in to their carnal desires without restraint during their earthly lives. As we moved on to the circle of the Gluttonous, I saw wretches lying in filth, tormented by an unending rain of vile sludge.
